Visit Door County … the Cape Cod of the Midwest

Door County in Northern Wisconsin is one of the premier vacation destinations in the Midwest. The county has roughly 28,000 residents, but its population swells during the summer months to around 250,000. People from Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis-St. Paul and more come to Door County to experience its natural habitat, five state parks, and 12 lighthouses. The small town, quaint surroundings, and nautical feel have given Door County the name “Cape Cod of the Midwest.”

Door County’s Great Outdoors

Outdoor enthusiasts love Door County for the variety of recreational activities. Fishing is popular on this peninsula, with brown trout, walleye, and salmon some of the top catches. Numerous charter captains are eager to take you out and help you “land the big one.” With more than 250 miles of coastline, Door County has plenty of clean, sandy beaches along Green Bay and Lake Michigan. Or get some exercise out in the fresh air and take a bike ride or hike along the lakeshore. Hit the water on a rented boat or kayak, or visit the Egg Harbor Fun Park with go-karts, mini golf, paintball, plus arcade and games area. Don’t miss Cave Point County Park and Whitefish Dunes State Park, both on Wisconsin’s eastern shore.

Door County Specialties

With the popularity of fishing, it only stands to reason that fish boils are found at many area restaurants. Local whitefish, onions, and potatoes are cooked in large kettles over a wood fire. You can then finish off your meal with a delicious cherry pie. Cherry growing dates back to the 19th century, and the environment of Door County is perfect for growing this fruit. Golden Delicious and Paula Red apples are also grown here…and check out the five wineries in the county.

Door County is on the Lake Michigan Circle Tour

If you are following the Lake Michigan Circle Tour, the official route around Door County is as follows:
In order to enter the Door Peninsula, take STH-42 into Sturgeon Bay. After crossing the bridge over the bay, continue northwest on STH-42 and pass through Carlsville, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, and Ephraim. In the northern part of Door County, at Sister Bay, you will turn southeast on STH-57 and pass through Bailey’s Harbor and Jacksonport before returning back to STH-42 and traveling again through Sturgeon Bay, as you leave the Door County Peninsula.
