Discover Mackinac Island, Michigan

Although not technically a Lake Michigan destination because Mackinac Island is located on the Lake Huron side of the Straits of Mackinac, we are including this Northern Michigan island due to its appeal and proximity.


Mackinac Island is rich in history and filled with the most magnificent vistas. Mackinac Island scenery is stunning: a tortoise shaped island surrounded by the aqua blue waters of Lake Huron. The seven-mile long road that goes around the island is a favorite of bike riders and walkers. Vehicles are not permitted on Mackinac Island so transportation takes place by horse drawn carriages and bicycles.

The famous Grand Hotel sits on the bluff overlooking the Straits of Mackinac and the Mackinac Bridge. Many movies have been filmed at the Grand Hotel and on Mackinac Island including “This Time for Keeps” and “Somewhere in Time.”

Mackinaw Island Ferry Boats

Mackinac Island ferry boats carry passengers from either Mackinaw City or St. Ignace. The downtown area of Mackinac Island is nestled beneath majestic Fort Mackinac. The quaint and historic shopping district is filled with small shops including fudge shops. Dining on the Island has everything from tiny places to fine dining.

Carriage tours around and through the island offer a glimpse of the history and importance of Mackinac Island. Special events takes place such as the Lilac Festival where hundreds of varieties of lilacs are celebrated.
